Car Travel Safety for Dogs: The Honest Guide

Car Travel Safety for Dogs: The Honest Guide

We love taking our dogs everywhere, but a loose dog in a moving car is genuinely dangerous: for them, for you, and for the driver who has to brake suddenly. Securing your dog properly is the single most important upgrade you can make to your road trips.

Why a loose dog is a problem

In a sudden stop, an unsecured dog becomes a projectile. Even at low speeds, a dog can be thrown into the footwell or against a seat hard enough to be hurt. They can also distract the driver at exactly the wrong moment, or bolt from an opened door at a service stop.

The options, ranked

  • A crash-tested crate is the gold standard for larger vehicles
  • A secured car bed with anchor straps keeps small and medium dogs settled and contained
  • A back-seat hammock stops dogs tumbling into the footwell and protects your seats
  • A harness clipped to a seatbelt tether is the minimum for any journey

Keep it calm, keep it clean

A settled dog travels better. Give them a familiar bed or blanket so the space smells like home, and a long-lasting chew or puzzle for longer drives. Waterproof covers mean a muddy, post-hike dog never becomes a cleaning job, which makes you far more likely to say yes to the next adventure.

Before every trip

Pack water and a travel bowl, plan a stop every couple of hours for longer drives, and never leave a dog in a parked car in warm weather. Get these basics right and the car becomes just another part of the adventure, not the stressful bit before it.
